What is a Valve Tool and How Do You Use It

A valve tool, specifically a valve spring compressor, is a tool used in engine maintenance and repair to remove and install valve springs and their associated components.
The valve spring compressor typically consists of a compression rod with a hooked end and a bearing washer. Here is how you can use it:
Preparation: Ensure the engine is cool and the cylinder head is accessible. Also, make sure you have the correct valve spring compressor for your engine type.
Remove spark plugs: Before working on the valves, remove the spark plugs to minimize resistance when turning the engine.
Access the valve: Remove any components obstructing access to the valve, such as the valve cover or rocker arm assembly.
Compress the valve spring: Place the valve spring compressor with the hooked end around the valve spring. Ensure the hook is under the spring retainer. The bearing washer should be positioned against the cylinder head to prevent damage.
Compress the spring: Rotate the compression rod clockwise to compress the spring. This will release tension on the valve locks or keepers.
Remove valve locks: With the spring compressed, remove the valve locks or keepers from their grooves using a magnet or small pick tool. Take care not to lose or damage these small parts.
Remove valve components: Once the valve locks are removed, release the compression rod by turning it counterclockwise. This will release the tension on the valve spring, allowing you to remove the spring, retainer, and other related components.
Install new components: To install new valve components, reverse the process. Place the valve spring and retainer in position, then use the valve spring compressor to compress the spring. Insert and secure the valve locks or keepers.
Release spring tension: Finally, release the compression rod counterclockwise to release the tension on the valve spring. You can then remove the valve spring compressor.
Remember to repeat these steps for each valve as necessary, and always consult your engine’s repair manual or seek professional assistance if you are unsure or inexperienced with valve spring compression.
